How To Turn Off Your Main Water Supply

Have you ever woke up in the middle of the night and to hear a gushing sound, there is a pretty good chance that you have a broken pipe in your house.

If you don’t know how to turn off your main water supply this could cause lots of damage and cost you tons of money…

(Knowing how to turn off the main water supply in your house is not only important but could save you lots of money in the future.)

So, first you need to locate your main valve.
In most modern homes the main supply line will come into the house in the garage area. It should be fairly easy to find because it will be the biggest line that is coming from the outside to the house.
Once you find it, you will see a straight valve. This is the one, that you need to shut off. Turn the valve to the right. This should do the trick. Simple.

Now, you need to check that you actually did shut the water off.
Go to you kitchen sink and turn on both cold and hot water to make sure that you drain the pressure from the system.
This is very important, because even after you shut the water off there is always some water left in the pipes and you need to drain it.
If you are having a hard time locating your main valve, keep in mind that in some of the older home, this can be located outside of the house. They should be clearly marked in a green box and not very hard to find. And as always, with any of your plumbing projects, make sure you call licensed and insured professional.
